(more)Kowalski. It is a story that is largely forgotten in most history books today. Each prison and gulag Stanley is sent is "no place to call home". Stanley Kowalski was born in Jazlowiec, Poland in 1920. At the age of 19, he was captured by the Soviets and incarcerated in numerous prisons before being sentenced to the Siberian gulag in the gold mines of Kolyma. Of the unknown thousands sent to the Siberian gulags, few would return, one of them being Stanley Kowalski. On Memorial Day, 2009, The National Military History Center in Auburn, Indiana hosted its annual Memorial Day Remembrance to honor all veterans. Featured this year was the presentation of the Siberian Cross to Stanley Kowalski. The Siberian Cross (also known as the Cross of the Deported) honors the survivors of the 1-2 million Polish citizens who were deported by Stalin during the Second World War. This is the second published book for Colorado author, Alexandra Everist. “A Katrina Moment” was published in 2008. It is a fictionalized account of two lovers who remain behind in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. In the days following the storm, prejudice disappears as the two work hand-in-hand with other survivors to assist in relief efforts. His last stop will be here in Bethlehem for just two performances -- 1pm and 5pm. In the 1800s, it was quite common for authors to read abridged versions of their stories before audiences. These readings could become quite animated, with the author acting out many of the parts. Charles Dickens was particularly famous for his readings and would often receive standing ovations upon their completion. When Gerald, an actor and producer from Oxford, England, was asked to put together a performance for the 150th anniversary of A Christmas Carol, he created his first theatrical performance inspired by Charles' own entertaining readings of the 1860s. During his energetic one-man show, Gerald Dickens brings A Christmas Carol to life, depicting 26 characters of the classic tale, with just a table, wing chair, and hat rack accompanying him on stage. He has created different postures and voices for each character, achieving this so adeptly that the audience has no doubt about "who is who", so to speak. “Oregon’s Timber Country Past and Future,” is theme of Dr. Victoria Sturtevant’s illustrated lecture scheduled for Thursday, December 10, 2009, 4 pm, in the Meese Room (#305) of Hannon Library at Southern Oregon University. Part of the Friends of Hannon Library lecture series, the talk will survey ... (more)the industry that once ruled Oregon's economy, politics and identity, highlighting impacts of pressing global competition, increased environmental regulation and lawsuits, scaled back availability of timber on federal land, and declining markets. Sturtevant will explain private and public forest management trends in Oregon, with examples of forest-based responses by communities, groups, and government agencies. The talk is free of charge and open to the public. Victoria Sturtevant taught sociology and environmental studies at Southern Oregon University from 1980-2008. She worked on two major ecosystem assessments, the Forest Ecosystem Management Assessment Team (FEMAT) for President Clinton's Forest Plan and the Sierra Nevada Ecosystem Project (SNEP) commissioned by the U.S. Congress. Both projects examined community capacity to adapt to new federal forest policies. Her research has focused on the social dimensions of forest management, particularly community involvement in forest management policy, social assessments, ecological monitoring, wildfire protection planning, and collaborative stewardship. She works with local groups including the Southern Oregon Small Diameter Collaborative, Alliance of Forest Workers and Harvesters, and Applegate Partnership. Sturtevant has published articles in Society and Natural Resources, Journal of Forestry, and Journal of Community Development. She co-edited the book, Forest Community Connections: Implications for Research, Management, and Governance (2008) with Ellen M. Donoghue. Parking will be available for this event.
